That whisper is the reason I became a women's mentor. And it is the reason I am writing this post.
Confidence is the most searched-for quality among the women I work with. Whether you are a 28-year-old stepping into your first leadership role, a 45-year-old returning to work after raising children, or a 60-year-old launching the business you have been dreaming about for decades at some point, confidence has felt like the missing piece.
I want to offer you something different from the usual listicle. Not "5 power poses to try in the mirror." Not toxic positivity. What follows are seven truths I have gathered across three decades of walking alongside women truths that the research actually backs up, and that I have watched transform lives.
Research from The Confidence Code shows that roughly half of our confidence is genetic. The other half? It is built entirely through our habits, choices, and the stories we choose to keep telling ourselves. That means right now, today, you have the power to begin building it.
The 7 honest truths about building confidence as a woman
Confidence does not come first action does
This is the truth that changes everything for almost every woman I work with. We have been sold a story that says: feel confident first, then act. But research from psychologist Albert Bandura shows the opposite is true. He calls them "mastery experiences" you do the thing, you survive the thing, and confidence is what grows in the aftermath. You do not wait to feel ready. You act, and readiness follows. Stop waiting to feel confident. Take one small step today and watch confidence begin to arrive.
The gap is not in your competence it is in your self-perception
A landmark study from Cornell University found that men consistently overestimate their abilities and women consistently underestimate theirs even when their actual performance is identical. Let that sink in. The gap is not real. It is a perception gap, built by years of being told, subtly and not so subtly, to make yourself smaller. One of the most powerful things I do in my 1:1 mentoring sessions is simply hold up a mirror and say: "Look at what you have actually done." The woman in front of me is rarely the woman she describes herself as.
"I have never once not in thirty years met a woman who lacked the capability to do what she wanted to do. I have met thousands who doubted it. There is a difference. And that difference is exactly where mentoring lives."
Your inner voice is not telling you the truth
We all have a narrator in our heads. For most women, that narrator learned its script a very long time ago from a critical parent, a dismissive teacher, a society that benefited from women staying quiet. The script says things like: "Who do you think you are?" "You are not qualified enough." "Other people do it better." I want you to know this: that voice is not you. It is not even close to accurate. The first step to building real, lasting confidence as a woman is to start catching the stories noticing when the narrator pipes up, and choosing not to believe everything it says.
"You can't think your way into confidence. You must act your way into it."
— Kay & Shipman, The Confidence CodeYour network is one of the most powerful confidence tools you have
Harvard Business Review research found that women with a tight-knit female inner circle just one to three close, trusted women — land leadership positions with 2.5 times higher authority and pay than those without one. 2.5 times. Not because of their qualifications. Because of their network. This is why I created Empowerment Circles. Not as a nice-to-have, but as a strategy. The women who grow fastest are the ones who stop trying to do it alone. Find your circle. Protect it. Show up for it.
Self-compassion is not soft it is scientifically more effective than self-criticism
Research shows that treating yourself with the same kindness you would give a dear friend reduces stress hormones by roughly 25% compared to self-criticism. And yet, the women I work with are almost universally far harsher on themselves than they would ever dream of being to someone they love. Confidence is not built by flogging yourself into shape. It is built by the steady accumulation of self-trust and you cannot trust someone you are constantly punishing. Start speaking to yourself the way you would speak to a woman you believe in. Because I believe in you, and you deserve to as well.
You do not need 100% of the qualifications to put yourself forward
Research from Hewlett-Packard found that men applied for roles when they met about 60% of the requirements. Women applied only when they met 100%. That is not a personal failing it is a pattern that has been documented across industries and cultures. I call it the permission problem. Women wait for full permission from their CV, from their experience, from their confidence level before they step forward. The work of confidence coaching for women is often simply this: giving women permission they never needed anyone else to grant them in the first place. You are already enough to begin.
Confidence is not a destination it is a daily practice
Even after thirty years of this work, I still have days when the doubt creeps in. The women who have the most lasting confidence are not the ones who got there and stayed. They are the ones who built daily habits that keep returning them to themselves. Small promises kept to themselves. Boundaries held. Achievements acknowledged rather than immediately minimised. One step taken before they felt ready. Confidence, in the end, is not about feeling fearless. It is about feeling and then moving anyway. That is the practice. That is the work. And you are already doing it by being here.
Where do you start?
If any of these seven truths landed for you if you found yourself nodding, or perhaps feeling a little sting of recognition then you already know something important: you are ready to go deeper.
The most powerful thing you can do right now, before anything else, is to get honest about where you are. That is exactly what my free interactive activities are designed to help you do. The Wheel of Life, the Mentoring Style Quiz, the journaling prompts they are not just exercises. They are the beginning of a conversation with yourself that most women have been putting off for years.
After that? Come and talk to me. Whether it is a one-off discovery session, joining one of my Empowerment Circles, or beginning a full 1:1 mentoring journey together I am here, and I am genuinely honoured to walk alongside you.
Because here is what I know after all these years you do not need fixing. You never did. You need a champion who sees you clearly and refuses to let you shrink.
That champion can be me. And one day, it will be you for yourself.
